Summer is here, and we have much to be thankful for and much to look forward to!
We are delighted to have had Pastor Russell with us now for several weeks! It has been a joy to begin working with him, as we get to know each other and look forward to ministry together here at Epiphany.
A group of our youth (and youth from our sister congregations in Winston-Salem) attended the National Youth Gathering in Houston at the end of June, returning home on Sunday, July 1. We are delighted that we were able to support the group in their participation, and look forward to hearing of their experiences in Houston.
Coming up in July we have Vacation Bible School (theme: Babylon: Daniel’s Courage in Captivity), in the evenings from Sunday, July 15 to Thursday, July 19. We thank all who are giving of their time and special talents to support VBS, and to the parents who will bring their children to participate!
And on Sunday July 22 at 4pm we will celebrate the installation of Pastor Russell. We look forward to having many attendees from our congregation and from neighboring churches and other Lutheran churches in the area on this special afternoon! There will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall after the installation. Please plan to be here!
We very much appreciate the support and participation of our members throughout the year, and want to note especially those who will be assisting with activities and programs over the summer. In addition to VBS, there are other activities which continue throughout the summer, such as the Food Pantry at Ibrahim Elementary, and the EECC with its expanded PALS summer camp program. The PALS program this year is using larger space at Burkhead United Methodist Church, which accommodates a higher enrollment than has been possible in prior years (20 students, plus room for drop-ins).
At its last meeting the Congregation Council received an update from the Stewardship Ministry Team on our stewardship program, Stewardship for All Seasons (SAS). Going forward we will be collaborating on implementing this program which helps us focus on ministry and mission at Epiphany. The Stewardship Team is looking for additional help. If you are interested in working with this Team, please speak to Dan Meckley or Kay Conrad.
The Congregation Council was made aware that we need additional people to help with several of the Outreach Ministry Teams, such as the Food Pantry (and others). If you can give some time to these ministries, please speak to Carol Middleton, Margaret Brock, or Jim Pierson.
The Pennington-Pensby Properties Planning Ministry Team has indicated that they will soon be presenting a report to the Executive Committee. They have been working diligently on preparation of a proposal, taking into account many factors, including the congregational feedback received. However, there is still some work to be done — review of the proposal with the Executive Committee, presentation of the proposal to the Council, communication to the congregation (including some Q&A meetings to give members a chance to discuss the proposal), consultation with the Finance Ministry Team on possible budget impact of the proposal — before we will be prepared to call a congregational meeting to consider the proposal and make a decision on next steps. Thus, we were not able to schedule the special congregational meeting in June, as was requested at the January Annual Meeting. Once the Executive Committee has had the opportunity to review the proposal from the planning team, we will communicate a timeline for completion of this process to the congregation.
The Executive Committee continues its work assembling a Strategic Planning Ministry Team. Potential team members have been identified, and we expect to have the team in place and beginning its work by the end of the summer.
We look forward to your continued involvement and support through the second half of the year!
